New Year's
Resolutions
As we approach the end of the year, most
of us begin to start thinking about news year's resolutions. But if
you think about it, new years resolutions are nothing more than
goals, except that we deliberately put off working on them until
January 1.
But if you think about it, what is a new
year? As we move through space and time, who and why was it decided
that January 1 is the beginning of the year? And how was it decided
when January 1 would be in reference to the earth's position to the
sun? It's kind of like the time zones. Right now it is one
time in New York and another in Tokyo, and another in Honolulu. Who
has the right time and why?
So if you think about it, when should we
start the new year's resolutions?
I suggest that the best time to start is
right now. You do not have to wait until January to get going.
Below is a seven step process to set and
achieve your resolutions (goals).
1) Take a pad of paper and write down
all the things that you want to accomplish in life. Include
everything you can think of, travel, material things, relationships,
health goals, contributions to society, etc.
2) Decide when you want to accomplish
the goals, divided into the following timelines: 30 days, 90 days, 1
year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 25+ years. Then, on the
left hand column mark each goal with its projected timeline.
3) Prioritize the goals by importance.
Mark A for the ones you really want to accomplish, B for the ones
that would be nice to accomplish and C for those that you would be
ok with if you didn't accomplish.
4) Now that you have your main goals and
a timeline to accomplish them, take each one and rewrite it in the
present, positive and first person as if you have already
accomplished it. Also include a completion date. For example: I am
the Director of Sales at XYZ company by March 21, 2009.
I have traveled to Egypt by April 2011.
I own a house in Nichols Hills by July 2012. I donate a little
league baseball field by April 2018.
5) Take each goal and break it down into
the actions that you will have to do to make these goals a reality.
6) Read your goals every day and do
something that takes you closer to your goal every day.
7) Keep on going. Some goals you will
achieve faster than others. But whatever you do, do not get
discouraged. Keep going, keep going and keep going. You will
eventually achieve any goal you set for yourself if you give it
enough effort and enough time.
